Some of the articles in this issue:

  • Independent Sector's release of its "Guidelines for the Funding of Nonprofit Organizations," authored by Hewlett Foundation president Paul Brest, is generating interest in the press. The guidelines call on funders to provide multiyear, general support when appropriate.

  • The Hewlett Foundation has been conducting communications trainings for grantees. The Foundation worked with Spitfire Strategies to provide a simple, useful tool to help grantees create effective communications strategies.

  • A new study from the California Arts Council shows that nonprofit arts organizations are pumping $5.4 billion into California's economy each year, and employ more than 150,000 people.

  • The Environmental Protection Agency issued a comprehensive regulation that will cut emission levels from nonroad vehicles like construction and agricultural equipment. This will prevent an estimated 12,000 premature deaths each year as well as 6,000 asthma-related emergency room visits. Hewlett grantee Breakthrough Technologies Institute worked with a wide array of partners to compile data and build consensus for the result.
