The Mayfair community has identified the following as key issue areas:
- Youth prepared for success
- Access to economic opportunity
- A healthy community
- A safe and secure community
- Available quality housing
With more than seventy-five projects launched since inception, strategic investments in 2001 led to significant results in the areas of neighborhood infrastructure development, health outreach and education, and economic development. For example, the Mayfair Improvement Initiative:
- Facilitated physical neighborhood infrastructure improvements, which included the installation of fifty-three new or upgraded streetlights; forty repaired sidewalks; $3.9 million in enhancements leveraged from the Santa Clara Valley Water District; and the adoption of a community-developed design for the city’s renovation of the Mayfair park and community center.
- Enrolled 498 children in state-sponsored health insurance programs; provided health screenings for 304 residents through a public health mobile van; conducted dental checkups for 303 children; and disseminated health education information about the prevention of either life-threatening or debilitating conditions to 1,148 residents.
- Created the Mayfair Computer Academy (MCA), which assisted 116 graduates to earn technical certifications (A+, Network+, or CCNA), secure employment, and/or enroll in continuing education courses.
- Working in concert with businesses, the San Jose Police Department, and the City of San Jose, 475 Mayfair residents helped to create a small business association and a block captain program, and conducted neighborhood clean-ups.
- Led neighborhood action planning efforts for the City of San Jose’s Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI), patterned after the Neighborhood Improvement Initiative model, to improve both the physical conditions of neighborhoods and the social life of their residents.
