California's schools rank near the bottom nationally in student outcomes such as test scores and graduation rates. Many schools lack the resources necessary for their children to learn effectively. At the same time, California lags the nation in the proportion of recent high school graduates attending college. Recent fiscal crises have further imperiled the state's ability to provide a quality education to its growing population. Increased opportunities for students to succeed at both the high school and college levels are essential to support the state's eceonomy and growing population.
The Foundation seeks to stimulate major improvement in the quality of K-12 education in California and to strengthen the California community college system to prepare for a large influx of students. Our efforts involve promoting citizen understanding of education issues by providing accurate information about the state's educational needs and the ability of schools and community colleges to address them. The Foundation also supports research to inform policymakers as well as demonstrations of methods for improving outcomes, especially for underserved students. The Foundation does not make grants to support individual K-12 schools.
