Cal-PASS
(California Partnership for Achieving Student Success)

Based at Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, Cal-PASS is a partnership of K-12 schools, community colleges, and pubic universities to collect, share, and analyze student data with a goal of improving student achievement throughout the educational pipeline. The Cal-PASS project enables educators to ask and answer questions such as:

  1. How do my students do when they leave here?
  2. Did they complete a program of study and how long did it take?
  3. Would changes in curriculum or pedagogy improve their preparation?

Cal-PASS had been gathering longitudinal student information since 1998, and currently has more than 2,600 K-12, community college, and university members and a database of more the 100 million records. Accessible by member institutions, the data system is a rich resource for examining innovations, including those funded by private foundations. Cal-PASS seeks to stimulate effective use of data to improve instruction, curriculum, and campus-level practice. For example, the eleven community colleges participating in the Hewlett/Carnegie SPECC project are using Cal-PASS to yield comparable outcome data across the campuses. The ultimate goal of these efforts is to identify and reduce barriers to successful student transition at all levels of education.
