A strong community college system is integral to a thriving, prosperous, and diverse California. Community colleges serve as a bridge to opportunity, reengaging under-educated young Californians and working adults, preparing them to earn Bachelor's degrees or access workforce opportunities. For students who have faced barriers in education, the community colleges are their main gateway to higher education. California Tomorrow works to strengthen the capacity of California community colleges to improve access and success for students of color, immigrants and low-income students.
California's work with community colleges grew out of its 2003 publication, California's Gold: Claiming the Promise of Diversity in California's Community Colleges. As the book illustrated, the challenges of the state's increasingly diverse population require the community colleges to respond with greater resources, active leadership and effective models for realigning institutional practices. California Tomorrow's Access and Equity Initiative helps college leaders respond to these increasing pressures through a Campus Change Network – which offers capacity building and technical assistance to colleges developing comprehensive reforms to improve academic success for disadvantaged populations. California Tomorrow also engages in public education, advocacy and alliance building to ensure that the issues facing community colleges and their students remain in the agenda for policymakers and equity advocates.
