A project of the Foundation for California Community Colleges, the Career Ladders Project assists the state of California and the California Community Colleges in more effectively engaging and connecting disadvantaged and under-prepared youth and adults to college and careers. A notable example of this work includes the Gateway Project, which encompasses community partnerships that leverage resources across educational and workforce systems in six California counties. Gateway's bridge programs provide full-time college-credited coursework in developmental English and math, contextualized and linked to career pathway programs focused on high wage careers in demand in the regional economy. The Career Ladders Project also provides technical assistance to Career Advancement Academies funded by the state chancellor's office in three California regions that serve substantial numbers of young adults. Modeled in part on the Gateway program, the CAA is intended to build on the cumulative expertise and experience of existing bridge programs and foster a larger community of learners and engaged practitioners. The goal is to enhance the quality and coherence of statewide strategies to create college and career pathways to disadvantaged and disconnected young adults.
