Improving Instruction for Underprepared Students

Improving completion rates requires increasing the number and percentage of students who continue to their second year of college.  To reach that goal, our strategy focuses on improving success rates for underprepared students through community college developmental education programs.  Currently few students in these programs ever complete a degree or certificate.

In this area, we are funding research, demonstration, dissemination, and replication to increase success rates in developmental math and English, a key to ultimate achievement in higher education.  We have invested in several projects to research and pilot practices for serving underprepared community college students, and face the challenge of sustaining and replicating the most effective among them, a challenge we seek to address in future investments.
