The Council on Foreign Relations Center for Universal Education was formed to work with key government officials, NGOs, and other experts to advance the goal of universal education in the world's poorest nations. The Center is directed by Gene Sperling. Since its founding in September 2001, the Center has worked to fill gaps in this policy area. Sperling has focused on convening key parties to review major policy issues regarding basic education, and on developing effective policies for a global education financing framework. He has also sought to highlight to the general public the need for education in poor countries.
Through the Foundation's support, the Center hopes to strengthen support for a global compact on education by engaging policymakers and opinion leaders from the U.S. and other wealthy countries and impressing upon them the importance of education in poor countries, the need for sound policies and donor coordination, and the need for dramatically increased financial support on the part of developed countries to achieve this goal.
