This essay summarizes the Hewlett Foundation’s approach to philanthropy. It does not focus on the substance of the Foundation’s programs, each of which would require a separate essay. Rather, it discusses the way we think about and do our work throughout the Foundation. Our approach grows out of the core principles adopted by the Board of Directors several years ago in an effort to capture the spirit of the founders and the Foundation’s practices in its first three decades.
