Shayna Cunningham

Program Officer

Shayna Cunningham serves as a Program Officer for the Global Development and Population Program.  Shayna works across the Program to make grants to promote better demographic training, data collection and use, high-quality research, and effective communication of that research to foster sound policies in sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions. She is also involved in the Foundation's "Think Tank Initiative," which works to strengthen policy research institutes based in the developing world.

Before joining the Hewlett Foundation, she was a senior research associate at Sociometrics Corporation. In that role, she was responsible for the design and implementation of research to develop and evaluate health promotion programs, particularly those related to sexual and reproductive health. As director of data products and services there, she led the production and dissemination of data archives, provided training on the effective use of data collection efforts, and oversaw the development of evaluation systems for private sector contracts. Earlier in her career, she served as served as a public health officer with the International Rescue Committee in Kibondo, Tanzania, where she managed a preventive health program for four refugee camps that served 60,000 displaced persons from Burundi, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Shayna holds a B.S. in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from the University of Vermont and a M.H.S. and Ph.D. in International Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
