Western Conservation Grantseekers

The Hewlett Foundation accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry for its Western Conservation Program. We support efforts that protect and improve the ecological integrity of the West in 12 states and 3 Canadian provinces:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Idaho
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • Oregon
  • Washington
  • Wyoming
  • British Columbia
  • Alberta
  • Yukon

You can begin by reading about the Western Conservation Program and what we support (and do not support). If you decide your project or organization fits within our guidelines, you may submit a letter of inquiry online.

What we support:

The Western Conservation Program concentrates its grantmaking activities in four key strategy areas: Land, Water, Energy, and Broad-based Support. Please read more about these areas before submitting a Letter of Inquiry.

Activities the Foundation does not fund:

  • Environmental education
  • Forest monitoring
  • Sustainable forestry projects
  • Wildfire management
  • Land acquisition
  • Conservation easements
  • Habitat restoration
  • Watershed restoration
  • Stream and riverbank restoration
  • Marine conservation
  • Renewable energy equipment purchases
  • Books (writing or publication)
  • Films and videos (production or distribution)

While the Foundation's grants may be used to support public education, nonpartisan research and analysis, and policy-related activities, the Foundation's funds cannot be used for IRS-defined federal lobbying, which is outside the legal scope of the Foundation's mission.

The Foundation occasionally makes operating grants to organizations, always based on the grantee's organizational priorities and their compatibility with the Foundation's conservation goals.

There are no deadlines for submitting Letters of Inquiry. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.
