Overview
This grant will support production and distribution of a documentary by filmmaker Aviva Kempner focused on the incredible story of businessman and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, and how he joined with African-American communities in the South to build 5,000 schools during the Jim Crow period. The film also highlights the Rosenwald Fund, which awarded grants to America’s greatest African-American artists and intellectuals, including Marian Anderson, Julian Bond, Ralph Bunche, W.E.B. Du Bois, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Gordon Parks, James Baldwin, Jacob Lawrence, and Augusta Savage. A DVD of bonus features goes deeper into the many aspects of Rosenwald’s giving.
