The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, commonly known as "J-PAL," is a network of 44 professors around the world who are united by their use of sound research to help reduce poverty. The network, with headquarters in the economics department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and regional offices around the world, is driven by a shared belief in the power of scientific evidence to understand what helps the poor. Lab partners conduct their own research, train others how to conduct randomized evaluation to assess the effectiveness of research, and work to ensure that what they learn informs policy. The Lab is named for Abdul Latif Jameel, father of the MIT alumnus Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel who is a major supporter of the Lab's work.
