Public lands make up over 85 percent of the West, and management of these lands is critical to the health of the region; indeed, some of these vast forested lands are essential to the health of the planet. Private lands comprise 15 percent of Western lands, and private landowners are increasingly receptive to conservation efforts. Our goal is to ensure that public and private lands are managed to support both conservation and sustainable human use. The Foundation will support organizations working to accomplish the following objectives.

  • Achieve West-wide policy changes that protect roadless areas
  • Increase and target public funding for private land conservation toward high priority landscapes
  • Ensure climate protection policies include ecosystem conservation and adaptation priorities
