Emerging Arts Leaders
Between 2007 and 2009, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and The James Irvine Foundation conducted research that found that although emerging arts leaders are inspired to enter the arts administration field, they face barriers to developing satisfying and successful careers.
To help address this problem, the foundations partnered to support organizations that are cultivating the next generation of California arts leaders by providing opportunities for their professional development, networking, and mentorship. Both foundations provided grants to the Emerging Arts Professionals/San Francisco Bay Area (through Intersection for the Arts) and genARTS Silicon Valley (through Silicon Valley Arts Council), as well as the Center for Cultural Innovation for its NextGen Arts Leadership Initiative. The Irvine Foundation has also provided grants to the Rising Arts Leaders San Diego (a program of the San Diego Foundation) and Emerging Arts Leaders/Los Angeles (a project of Community Partners). Together, these organizations provide peer networking opportunities, professional development grants for emerging leaders, and grants for organizations to explore new policies and innovative practices that will help sustain the leaders of the next generation.
