Byron Carlson is a Senior Infrastructure Engineer at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. He is responsible for managing the back-end infrastructure of the foundation’s information technology systems.
Byron most recently worked at Xperi/Tessera as a senior systems administrator responsible for managing the back-end infrastructure of the company’s corporate headquarters in San Jose, Calif. and its Santa Clara, Calif. data center. Prior to Xperi/Tessera, Byron worked at Bruker as a network and systems engineer responsible for global infrastructure and at MetroPCS as a systems administrator supporting their Alameda, Calif. headquarters and 12 Bay area retail locations.
Byron also worked at Varian Inc. as a systems administrator responsible for global infrastructure, at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Hospital as a senior field service engineer responsible for supporting back-end infrastructure and end-user devices, at Smith and Hawken as a systems administrator, and as a product specialist at Farallon/Netopia.
Byron graduated from Computer Learning Center in San Francisco with a certificate in computer programming in 1995, and stays up to date in IT technology through his challenging and expansive positions, studying on his own and taking classes. His role at the Hewlett Foundation meets a long-held desire to work for an organization that does something for the greater good of the world. A Bay Area native born in San Francisco and raised in Pleasant Hill, Byron has a teenage son and an infant daughter, and enjoys running, lifting weights, hiking and travel in his spare time.
